Seljalandsfoss is the waterfall you can walk behind. The stream drops about 60 metres from an old sea cliff, and a path loops around the back of the curtain of water.
A short walk north along the cliffs leads to Gljúfrabúi, a smaller waterfall hidden inside a narrow canyon.
Getting there
Seljalandsfoss is just off Route 1 on road 249, clearly visible from the main road. There is a car park with paid parking and toilets.
When to go
All year, but the path behind the falls usually closes when it is icy in winter. Summer evenings bring golden light from the west.
Good to know
- Wear a waterproof jacket and shoes with grip.
- Don't miss Gljúfrabúi, a few minutes' walk away.
- Come early or late to avoid the tour buses.
