In the East Fjords the Ring Road and the coast road wind in and out of long fjords, past steep mountains, small fishing villages and very little traffic.
It is one of the quietest and most scenic drives in Iceland, with stops like Fáskrúðsfjörður, Stöðvarfjörður and Djúpivogur, and a detour to colourful Seyðisfjörður.
Getting there
Drive between Höfn and Egilsstaðir along the coast. Allow extra time: the fjords add many kilometres, and you will want to stop.
When to go
Best from late spring to autumn. In winter, mountain passes such as the road to Seyðisfjörður can close in snow.
Good to know
- Fill up on fuel when you can; stations are spread out.
- Look for reindeer in winter and spring.
- Check road.is for pass closures.
