Stokksnes

Stokksnes is a black sand peninsula near Höfn, with grass-tufted dunes and the jagged Vestrahorn mountain rising behind. It is one of the most photographed coastal landscapes in Iceland.

The land is private, and a small entry fee is paid at the Viking Café at the start of the road.

Getting there

Turn off Route 1 about 10 km east of Höfn and follow the gravel road to the Viking Café, then on to the dunes and the beach.

When to go

All year. Calm days at low tide give reflections of Vestrahorn in the wet sand.

Good to know

  • Check the tide for mirror reflections.
  • Visit at sunrise or sunset for golden light on the grass.
  • Stay off fragile dune grass where marked.
