Diamond Beach is the black sand shore of Breiðamerkursandur, right where the river from Jökulsárlón meets the sea. Icebergs that drift out of the lagoon are thrown back onto the beach by the waves.
The ice comes in every size, from fist-sized pieces to blocks taller than you, and it changes from clear to milky white to deep blue. It is one of the best places in Iceland for photography, especially at sunrise and sunset.
Getting there
The beach lies on both sides of the river mouth, just south of the Route 1 bridge by Jökulsárlón. Use the marked car parks beside the road; the main Jökulsárlón car park, a few minutes' walk away, has paid national park parking, a café and toilets.
When to go
All year. Winter brings fewer people, short days and the chance of northern lights; summer is busier. How much ice lies on the beach changes daily with tides and waves.
Good to know
- Never climb or sit on the icebergs: they are slippery and sharp and can roll.
- Keep well back from the water's edge and never turn your back on the sea.
- Come at sunrise or sunset for the best light on the ice.
- Combine it with Jökulsárlón, just across the road.
